This problem is not unsermake-specific, but happens with the autotools as well 
(see below),

Sure: the ocaml stuff of kalzium does not compile with srcdir != builddir.
So, if you want to compile it when doing packages and using srcdir != 
builddir, a dirty hack you can do is to cp $srcdir/kalzium/src/solver to 
$destdir/kalzium/src.
