Actually, further analysis shows that it's just /proc that is empty.

I know for a fact that kdeinit's environment isn't empty. Anything=20
launched from kdeinit contains the environment variables I set before=20
startkde, therefore before kdeinit.

But cat /proc/`pidof kdeinit`/environment shows 1885 bytes of NUL.
