textual tagging is a subset of tagging and only one possible implementation.
there are several ways to create and manipulate grouping through user defined
labels.

in any case, one trivial/obvious way that text tagging can be faster is if you
can see the tags at all times and drag icons onto the tags. this way you can
scroll through large lists of documents and continue to group them without
having to have specific part of the content window showing (divorcing content
view from organization).

another way is that if one keeps the tags around (including harvesting them
from metadata to begin with) one can quickly switch between different
grouping configurations with one or two clicks which can arrange the entire
collection. an example might be selecting "date" and dragging a slider
to "last 2 months". or clicking on "people" and selecting "mark" from a list
of shown possibilities. so through tagging, even textual, one can save time
by preserving attributes on which to group, sort and filter rather than doing
it manually every single time.

this: http://www.liquidbrowsing.com/ has some very interesting concepts. we've
met with the creator of this concept in person a couple times and he's
willing to let us use the concepts in kde.

i really think that if we sometimes say "this isn't good enough" and simply
remove that as a possible answer (e.g. "no free dragging") that we'll come up
with actual good answers that achieve the desired solution in a better way.
meantime we can be pragmatic and keep free dragging, but being content with
it or arguing that it MUST be there because it's the answer we have is
personally unsatisfying =)

heh. glad you like that. it's something we discussed last year in the
usability group one of the times i was in germany. i think it has great
potential. it's also a form of tagging ;)
