For old-style CD playback you don't need Phonon, but if CD playback goes 
through the PCM device then yes, it should integrate with Phonon. Currently 
there's no backend-agnostic way of doing that. For example libxine takes 
cdda:/1 as "MRL" to play the first track of the CD. Let me know what API you 
need and I will take a look at providing it with Phonon.
