I'm currently also implementing a new application, but here it works as 
advertised ;-)
Probably you don't have a Categories in the .desktop file ?
But I think if you don't it should at least apper in an "Applications" 
category...

So all I did was: Makefile.am
xdg_apps_DATA = kbackup.desktop

in kbackup.desktop
Categories=System;KDE;X-SuSE-Backup;

And it shows up below System/Backup on a Suse9.3 system
