If you know Java and thus object orientation and C and thus the syntax of 
C++ I do not see any problem in coding C++ for KDE. You will learn all the 
missing things on the fly during coding and looking at already written 
code.

Try to use same style as the code you modify already uses. Pick some 
bugs or wishlist items from the BugTracker and fix them. This helps 
learning a lot. And you would please lots of people.

I myself started with C and now probably coded in 10 or more different 
languages all of them learning on the fly. Only the general concepts are 
really important, the syntax is a matter of coding practice.

BTW: A good book for C++ might by handy, but I can't recommend one myself. 
"Bjarne Stroustroup's: The C++ Programming Language" is not one of my 
favourites (much different to K&R: Programming in C which is really a fine 
piece ow work). Still searching a good C++ Reference.
