As part of the Xorg v7 upgrade, all of the Xorg *-dev packages have had .la 
files removed from them.  As a consequence, any package that depends upon a 
library that expects those .la files to exist will fail to build, and the 
packages that depend upon them, and so on.

If you see a message similar to this one, you've been bit by this problem.

'/usr/lib/libXcursor.la' is not a valid libtool archive

My advice is to avoid doing an apt-get upgrade for a few weeks until all the 
dependent packages have been rebuilt and uploaded.
