First, someone else working in the same timezone as me would be a very
welcome addition to the KDE project ;>
I'm biased, but we really need help in the kdepim module (KMail, KOrganizer, KNode, etc.)
This is a difficult time to get started with KDE as we are between major versions.
But if you are interested in kdepim, you might want to join us on IRC, irc.kde.org #kontact.
And/Or join the kde-pim@kde.org mailing list.
