I think you are probably correct.  I haven't managed to get scim
working on my machine (despite great efforts) but scim and skim will
be in the next release of dapper, so I will be able to play with them
then.

I would very much like to see skim become part of the standard kde
distribution (perhaps in kdebase/workspace).  It's pretty much
essential for asians that use kde.
If we do go this route (add skim to kde) then we can solve this
problem in the way you say.
