There is a sample kmdi app in
http://freehackers.org/~tnagy/bksys-1.5.0.tar.bz2
(kde3_examples/src/test7-kmdi/) - it is also available
as a kdevelop template (3.2).

This application was made by taking elements in the
kmdi tutorial and in the kdissert framework so it can
be worth a look, even if kmdi is now bound to
disappear.
