Supermount works very well in the 2.6 series. The kernel for Mandriva and 
PhoeNUX OS use it and it hasn't yet had a bug with the newer supermount-ng 
patch set. Mind you, the sanest way to get the patch for it is to browse the 
srpm of one of Mandriva's kernels and use the patch set that the Mandriva 
kernel team made work flawlessly with the recent kernel series'. Also, since 
supermount actually causes the vfs in the kernel to parse the file path 
provided for the stat, the issue that you commented on with regards to autofs 
is not present with supermount.
