For simplicity, I usually just install HEAD in /usr/local/kdeex and QT 
in /usr/local/qtex, and access it with a user kdeex, and he has an .xinitrc 
with /usr/local/kdeex/bin/startkde line in it, running on a second X session.

I know this doesn't help you with your problem, but it's so much simpler.
