Woot!  That did it:

deskLabel->setPaletteForegroundColor(deskFontColor);

...and now it works with transparent kicker, kicker with background, and 
without background.

I really should write all of this up and make an updated KApplet 
tutorial for the 'newbie' since I've been learning so much doing 
this. :D
