The X-server is the *only* place where the font resolution should be set. Use 
your distro's X config tool to set the size of the screen, and then X will 
properly set the dpi. Where do you get the 96dpi is the most common 
resolution? Windows? GNOME? I have a 15" TFT, and its native resolution is 
1024x768 - which gives a dpi of 85

GNOME has a dpi setting in its control center - but, AFAIK, this *only* 
affects Xft generated fonts. Applications using core X fonts would not be 
affected. So you'd have 2 different font sizes! How confusing! Setting, and 
then using, the dpi value in the X server resolves this.
