/ isn't allowed in filenames at all.

(, *, and ) would probably be more problem than it's worth, because of 
Makefiles. Same for $.

- is certainly used all over the place.

Aside from / and NUL, everything is allowed on Unix filesystems. But I 
don't think we're using more than the standard.

Just make sure it never executes or expands anything taken from the name.
