If you read even closer, UNIX started as Unics (poiting to legendary Multics), 
then became Unix and then AT&T made it UNIX (1974) and started to deal on it 
in the 80ies
Cygwin needs Windows as base (afaik there's nothing called "Cygwin" not 
running on M$ Windows) to provide posix compatibility and if you make a cat 
barking, it's still a cat ;)

honestly, imho this is one of the most stupid everlasting discussions - it 
just leads nowhere... (Who cares how it's written, the key aspect is that it 
just works)
so i suggest to (on this list) please let's agree that everyone's right on 
this (otherwise this thread could become really long...)
