    That's clearly a bug :( try:
    
$ setxkbmap us

    if you have several keybd layouts, it shows a nation flag in the system
tray. it also shows it if `Switching options' -> `Show indicator for single
layout' is enabled.

    you might be seeing 'ī', which is the acute tilde.
