there's no such things as an "across the board intermediate" user (so you get 
an interface that is poorly adjusted, or the settings are so fine grained you 
lose all benefits), people are bad at judging their skill level and this 
strategy creates a nearly impermiable barrier to learning the rest of the 
interface. in other words, this simply doesn't work very well in practice. 

ever wonder why, despite it being one of the most obvious ideas, virtually 
nobody uses this strategy, and why many who have later stopped doing so?
