Hello Steven!

Did you try to run Kooka from a shell window?

I had in a situation like yours problems running kdevelop form the 
start menu but Icould run it from a console. 

Red Hat's startkde script kde script might contain the following 
lines:
unset KDEDIR
unset KDEDIRS
Suse's startkde script does.

So it might be usefull to put the following lines into the .xinitrc 
script of the user who uses the self compiled KDE:
source .bashrc  #duno if this is necessary
WINDOWMANAGER=/<path to self compiled KDE>/bin/startkde
exec $WINDOWMANAGER
