Perhaps I've been lucky then, although I suspect it is due to the way Gentoo 
versions KDE.  In fact I used to get annoyed that I had to logout and then 
log back in in order to use my shiny new KDE. ;-)

I do have Fluxbox ready just in case KDE ever gets b0rked for some reason.  
It's nice and light, and easy to keep up-to-date.
