As I understand it - you don't even have to release the source code, so long 
as the software is free.

I don't know, I think they have taken a very strong viewpoint that if you in 
any small way receive money for working on the software and use their tools 
then you owe them.  All sources of money are covered - salary, research 
grants, support charges etc..
