Hello, Everyone :)
I just finished looking for an outstanding bug on this issue, but I
found none. I don't even know the official name of the component or
subcomponent that I should report this under, so I will call it by the
name that appears in the titlebar, "The KDE Crash Handler"

Using the default KDE that ships with Fedora Core 2, I get the following
backtrace when I try to run, let's say, "ksysv":

Using host libthread_db library "/lib/tls/libthread_db.so.1".
[Thread debugging using libthread_db enabled]
[New Thread -168582144 (LWP 4824)]
0x00b887a2 in _dl_sysinfo_int80 () from /lib/ld-linux.so.2
#0  0x00b887a2 in _dl_sysinfo_int80 () from /lib/ld-linux.so.2
#1  0x00de4e83 in __waitpid_nocancel () from /lib/tls/libpthread.so.0
#2  0xf679b323 in KCrash::defaultCrashHandler (sig=11)
    at kdecore/kcrash.cpp:246
#3  <signal handler called>
#4  0x0808229f in ksv::hostname () at ksysv/ksv_core.cpp:106
#5  0x0807dae5 in KSVTopLevel::setCaption (this=0x8430b48, changed=false)
    at ksysv/TopWidget.cpp:961
#6  0x0807a5ee in KSVTopLevel (this=0x8430b48) at ksysv/TopWidget.cpp:135
#7  0x0806352e in main (argc=1, argv=0xfeee5194) at ksysv/main.cpp:97

To clarify, on our system, root's $KDEDIR is "/usr" So if I su -, I get
the Fedora Core 2 shipped KDE Crash Handler.

Let's say I "su"'d (not "su -") into root, thereby using KDE from CVS
HEAD, which is exported into my non-root user path. Running "ksysv", I
get the following backtrace:

Using host libthread_db library "/lib/tls/libthread_db.so.1".
[Thread debugging using libthread_db enabled]
[New Thread -168582144 (LWP 4890)]
[KCrash handler]

#5  0x0807dae5 in KSVTopLevel::setCaption (this=0xa10c908, changed=false)
    at ksysv/TopWidget.cpp:961
#6  0x0807a5ee in KSVTopLevel (this=0xa10c908) at ksysv/TopWidget.cpp:135

As you can see, the line's numbered 0 through 3 are missing. They
display like they are supposed to for a second or two, then they appear
to scroll under the text that is above them. As you can imagine, this
could render (I assume) a backtrace useless.

This has been occuring for some time on our system. I only picked
"ksysv" for an example of something that crashes immediately when I
start it. Also, the only reason that running as root is relevant is
because that was the only easy way I could use the Fedora Core 2 shipped
KDE.

We are running Fedora Core 2, full installation (not an upgrade from a
previous version), all official and testing updates installed.
KDE is from CVS HEAD, compiled using Unsermake.
QT is from TrollTech's official 3.3.2 tarball.
If there is any more information I can provide for you, I would love to
oblige :)
Also, assuming that this is a bug, please let me know the component and
subcomponent that I should report it under.

Have a Great Day :)
Steven P. Ulrick
