I think that's the problem.  Perhaps QSemaphore would be OK for 
single-threaded use, but I think KTar would still be a better solution.

As far as code size goes, it's more important that it be understandable. ;-)  
KTar is already included with KDE, so linking to it won't bloat your code any 
more than normal.
