This looks damn familiar to me. I had this, too. IIRC it was caused by having
more than one instance of freetype installed. Actually, I had it installed 
three times: Once in /usr/lib, then in /usr/local/lib, and finally in
/usr/X11R6/lib. I removed them all, added "#define HasFreetype2 YES" and
"#define HasFontconfig YES" to my XFree hosts.def (to prevent installation in
the future; only advisable if you are using self-compiled XFree; It's defined
like that in Xorg already -- no need to change it there).

Although having more instances installed *shouldn't* be a problem, experience
shows it *is*. You constantly use the header files of one, and link with the
libs of another. Difficult to control.  :-)
