That's basically the problem: the kernel doesn't signal the error until 
much later. It keeps spitting warnings on the console saying there's an 
error reading, but it keeps trying. It'll take quite a long time to 
give up and report I/O error to the application. Try to 'cat' the file 
with defect and note how long it'll take to report error.

While that is happening, the kio_thumbnail process is completely stuck 
in uninterruptible sleep. It can't even be killed. Konqueror itself 
shouldn't hang, however.
