I want to type "edit filename.txt" at the command line and have the file 
loaded for editing in Kate.

I've created a small shell script that loads the file in to a running instance 
of Kate, no problem.
But I can't work out how to make that document the active one.
I've tried Kate - KateDocumentManager - Document but that doesn't seem to do 
anything.
What I need is Kate - KateDocumentManager - activateDocument but that doesn't 
seem to exist.

Any ideas?
