Well, just because the X RENDER Extension is available doesn't necessarily 
mean that it is hardware accelerated.  Using X Render may even be slower than 
drawing it yourself in some cases.  Perhaps if there was a way to detect 
whether the extension was hardware-accelerated, but even so, people may still 
prefer the plain one.
