What reasons are there to choose KDE/QT development environment over

Why do Redhat use GNOME as their default? Likewise with Sun?

What thoughts do you have on mono (www.go-mono.com)?

P.S I trying to choose which development environment to adopt. Choice
is good, but it is also confusing to the newbie since they have no
idea which to go with.
