I'm not a KDE expert, but at first I thought this might be one of those things 
where you were supposed to create it on the heap.  However browsing the docs 
seems to indicate creating it on the stack is right.

Perhaps you've accidentally left something out?  The docs are at:

Also, the KDE CVS sources may give you a few examples you can consult. ;)
