an unprecedented response to our survey of the country's top professional \
football Groundsmen, and an emphatic call for changes to be made.</p> \
<p>Intensive pre-match warm ups are causing serious damage to pitches, \
almost as much as the trench digging goalkeepers. Referees are ignoring \
offences even when they are pointed out to them, but are then very quick \
to report the groundsman when he resorts to taking matters into his own \
hands.</p> <p>The Authorities must take note, and we will make sure that \
they do.</p> <p>A big thank you to all the Groundsmen who had the courage \
to stand up for themselves and their colleagues.</p>
<p>Also my thanks to all our members for taking Pitchcare's membership \
past the 6000 member mark earlier this month. Currently, as I write, it \
stands at 6269!</p>

and Nationwide League Groundsmen received outstanding support. More than \
50% of the country's top football groundsmen responded, giving us their \
views on issues such as pitch damage.</p> <p>The results caused quite a \
stir, simply because we had the courage to name the clubs which were \
causing unnecessary damage to football pitches. An article in the Daily \
Telegraph and an interview with Talk Sport gave the issue national \
coverage.</p> <p>In the Premier League Middlesbrough and Liverpool were \
named as the worst clubs with their extensive pre match warm ups, with \
Scunthorpe and Oldham taking the ‘honours' in the lower \
divisions.</p> <p>Nearly all the groundsmen surveyed had problems with \
goalkeepers gouging unauthorised marks in the penalty areas (a \
cautionable offence) yet, not surprisingly, none of them had actually \
witnessed a yellow card being issued to any offender.</p> <p>Letters have \
been sent to the Football Association and the Football League's Playing \
Surfaces Committee seeking stricter guidelines for pre match warm ups and \
better supervision of goalkeepers. </p> <p><a \
