$LD_LIBRARY_PATH is indeed important, I think you should mention it in your
article. As for MANPATH, it can be left out.

In my article, which is 2 years old now, a lot has been added after users
asked me to add such and such thing. Which is good. In fact, a wiki would be
ideal for that sort of thing.
Try to cover most of the ground which is what you are doing, there will
always be a special case that you cannot cover. But I think you have the
most of it.

This was also added from a user request. Is it still valid? I don't know.

yes, startkde is enough :)
I am sure you will get feedback when the article is online and you will then
be able to update it. Maybe I should trim mine a bit as it is a bit
outdated.
I am currently writing the same sort of article in French for my LUG to help
people install safely alpha1. I'll make a presentation of the new kde3.2 and
I'll show them how safe it is to have it as another user, provided you have
the disc space to get the source and a minimum power to compile.
I'll also link my article to yours as soon as it's on developer.kde.org :-)
