I understood Michael's design that he only wanted to keep the images once,
in the image data.
The actual rendering taks place in the form of a list of small "tiles". If
these tiles approach a size of 1x1, you come to the region of micro-tile
arrays.
These are defined as a datastructure.

You may also look at QRegion from Qt, even if I am not quite sure if this
class applies to your needs.
