I think a normal dialog box is a good thing because: You can easily close it as it has normal window decorations It looks like a window, not like a grey box It isn't closed when you click on it It doesn't go away automatically after a while. (I know the two latter can be changed, but that will make it act differently from most of the other passive popups the user will encounter, which i dont think is good) I also think the passive popups are mainly supposed to be used to present information that is not important enough to warrant a normal modal popup dialog, but in this case i see it more like a program/wizard that is started.
