For a bandwidth monitor, I use KnetmonApplet.  I understand it is possible to 
use KSysGuard, but that defeated me too many times. :-D

A non-KDE solution that is truly excellent is GKrellM, but I wanted a solution 
that would integrate into the Panel, which KNetmonApplet does.
