GDB works pretty well. I don't see why another debugger that can attach to a 
running process would not work.

Restart kdeinit (i.e., re-run it).

Generally, I do it like this:
$ (cd ; kdeinit >> .xsession-errors 2>&1)

If you want to debug an ioslave, you'll set an environment variable whose name 
I can never remember.
