I am in the process of installing CUPS from source.

First problem is that it appears that I have to use GhostScript 7.0.5 for 
everything in KDE.

Is there some way that I can use the new version of GhostScript (8.10) for 
making PS and PDF files? -- other than using LPR that is.

NOTE FYI, GS 7.0.5 has serious problems making PDFs.
