This would be a nice feature.  Especially a maximum spacing to prevent 
problems caused by a long file name.  As you should know, if you place a 
file on the desktop that has a long file name, it can cause your icons 
arrangement to (basically) explode all over the desktop.

The problem has now gone away, so I'm not sure what caused it (It was 
probably a long file name, but there was no problem till I upgraded 
FreeType2).  But when I upgraded FreeType2, my icons were all over the 
place and I couldn't restore them, to where they were, until I changed the 
Desktop font from Arial Narrow 8 pt to Arial Narrow 7 pt.

I do think that the icon spacing is still slightly larger than it was 
before the upgrade.
