I am currently working on a SLP-based (www.srvloc.org) solution for file 
sharing and many other things. The SLP server, which it is based on, is 
pretty far. It should allow zero configuration operation for non-legacy 
systems and has many other capabilities that are not easily possible with 
port-scanning. For example you can announce shared directories with a 
description and similar information. There will also be a presentation about 
it at N7Y (if the paper has been accepted).

The only real problem is that other people might find it offensive to be 
scanned. It may be require some work to make LISA dynamically adapt to new 
networks though. Currently the configuration is semi-manual.
