You did not say what exactly was happening when you did redirection, so I am 
guessing here: did you enable redirection from your workgroup:// protocol to 
smb://?

By default, there are some strict rules regarding redirection. Check 
KApplication::redirectionAllowed (or similarly named method) in 
kdelibs/kdecore/kapp.cpp for more information. Also of interest is the 
README.kiosk file.
