Regarding: crashes

I had this same problem after upgrading to Qt 3.1.2 (amongst other bugs).

Rebuilding the kdewidgets.so and reinstalling it has fixed it for me so far.  
You may want to try rebuilding the other plugin libraries too.  AFAIK, the 
Gentoo/Designer forum problem is unrelated to this.
