Well, kttsd provides a parsing and priority system to work with warning, messages and long texts, I think gnome-speech doesn't provide that, and I don't know what gnome-speech provides that kttsd doesn't, but surely there are some things. The management of languages is very diferent too but I don't remember exactly how gnome-speech did it.
