Subject:    Providing context for translators?

I have some cryptic text strings to be i18n()ized. I would like to provide
some additional information to help the translators figure out what to do
with them? 

What's the best way to do it? A simple comment above them or is there a
better method?

(If it's something complicated, a pointer to example code would be
appreciated!)
