| Thats no problem as there are no /usr/X11R6/include/X11/Xft/Xft.h unless
| you installed it there yourself, which you did. The only Xft.h on a
|  standard redhat 8 system is /usr/include/Xft2/X11/Xft/Xft.h

I think you are wrong here.

[vad@VPlessky Xft]$ pwd
/usr/X11R6/include/X11/Xft
[vad@VPlessky Xft]$ ls -l
total 24
-r--r--r--    1 root     root         5399 Dec 11 01:00 XftCompat.h
-r--r--r--    1 root     root        12294 Dec 11 01:00 Xft.h

$ rpm -qf /usr/X11R6/include/X11/Xft/Xft.h
XFree86-devel-4.2.99.2-0.20021122.2
$ rpm -qf /usr/X11R6/include/X11/Xft/XftCompat.h
XFree86-devel-4.2.99.2-0.20021122.2

I need to admit here that my XFree86 is compiled from RawHide sources, so it's
somewhat more fresh tan XFree86 from RedHat 8 (which has XF-4.2.1)

|
| As stated above, i only have one Xft.h on the entire system
|

I also have just one Xft.h
$ locate Xft.h
/usr/X11R6/include/X11/Xft/Xft.h

| Unlike you, i managed to compile qt3 without changing anything on my
| system, but just by adding a -I option to configure and fixing the
| makefiles. You even caused trobles for yourself by installing FCPackage
| from source and hence have multiple Xft.h files, which i don't. Sure
| your way works too, but it is not as clean, and not as easy IMO.
