What is the optimization that your friend is using. If he added something like 
-march=pentium3 (or if it is the compiler's default) I am not sure if it 
really would work on a non-Pentium3.

So either use a Athon optimization for gcc ( -march=athlon or the other Athlon 
architechtures) or use an optimization usable for both (I am not sure which 
it would be.)
