Well... Basicaly I think, that it _is_ a good idea, that You actually use the 
automake version greater than strict 1.6; Because it is a known fact, that 
automake 1.6 is a very buggy thingy... Above 1.6 version should work just 
fine...
...but are You really sure, that You can't use automake 1.7? I have tryed it 
to build some time ago with 1.7.1, I think, and it compiled just fine :)
