Indeed! My thoughts precisely.

Personally I prefer things as they are now.

My Desktop is just a place to store shortcuts to applications
and folders I use often. The real files are stored in ~/ and
sub-folders. Defaulting to ~/ would not be my favourite. And
please, Manuel don't reply to this. It would not be MY
favourite option for MY way to work. I am too lazy to change.

However, I do recognize that, if the change can be made without
compromising current behaviour (as there are many defenders for
it), it should be made. Manuel did post some interesting points
about the Desktop (refer to his summary email) and, as far as I
can tell without investigating much proposed a way to do what he
asks that isn't too complicated.

If it should be the default or not, that's another story.

Now, can we please reach a conclusion? Is what Manuel proposes
doable without changing the current behaviour or not? If it is,
are there any strong reasons for not providing the possibility?

Let's be constructive, people. Recently, a lot of threads have
become too personal. Keep it to the facts. And personal taste IS
NOT a fact.

Regards,
Luis Carvalho
