Yeah, ran updatedb and:

$ slocate fonts.conf
/etc/fonts/fonts.conf

I was going to write that I'm all out of ideas, but I've decided to try with 
the following (the you've said was problematic)


                               <matrix><double>1</double><double>0.2</double>
                                        <double>0</double><double>1</double>
                                </matrix>

And it is working OK now. Strange, is it some kind of gambling freetype is 
adding to our lives ?
