slow hard disk?

BTW: what are your Qt and XFree86 versions?
Have you used -O3 or -O2 to compile?

It's certanly starts slower here, but I am on Mandrake 8.2, with gcc 3.0.4.
Plus, I have a lot of fonts installed (and old Qt-3.0.5, without FontConfig 
support)

New Window is instantaneous here, too.
