For about the last 3 weeks kwin won't start in my builds from cvs HEAD kde and 
qt-copy. 

strace kwin gives, at the end,
write(2, "kwin: <unknown>(0x6665646e): 183"..., 33kwin: <unknown>(0x6665646e):

) = 33

_exit(1)                                = ?

I can get kde3 to run, sort of,  by starting kde 2.2's version of kwin 
instead, but then the .xsession-errors file fills up rapidly with
WARNING: KDE detected X Error: 183 183
  Major opcode:  154

These error numbers don't appear in my /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/XErrorDB file
(X 4.03)

Any ideas?
