Hello,

I'm the Gentoo Linux packager of kde. The way ksplash-ml works (replacing
kdebase's ksplash binary) is inacceptable (package conflict over ownership of
'ksplash' and other reasons). Also, on Gentoo kde apps install in /usr while
KDE itself (all the kde.org-distributed stuff) installs in a separate dir and
several versions can be installed side by side. ksplash-ml should live in
/usr as well.

I'm going to modify our startkde to run $KSPLASH if defined, otherwise fall
back to 'ksplash'. Then the ksplash-ml package can set KSPLASH, or the user
can set it to customize things, and if a 3rd ksplash replacement is added to
Portage someday it can be worked into the system easily.

First though I'd like to know whether there are any plans to integrate
ksplash-ml into kde-proper, or at least to provide a kde-side configuration
mechanism to choose a ksplash program. I don't want Gentoo to end up with a
custom setup not easily upgradeable to the future generic one.

Letting the user select the splash app, or at least providing an option for
modules the way ksplash-ml does, is imho the right way to go. I'm sure many
users are tired of splashscreens for the default ksplash overwriting each
other, etc...
